Looking for a video production company in Virginia? You found one.
The Blue Wave is a video production company serving Virginia and the greater DMV, based just across the river in Rockville. We specialize in content + strategy. What does that mean? We make really good videos — and we know exactly what to do with them.
The DMV is compact — close-knit and easy to move around — so "based across the river" really means I'm on-site in Virginia all week, not flying in from out of state. We work in Tysons, Ashburn, Reston, Alexandria, Fairfax, Arlington, and down to Richmond, with businesses across Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William, and Loudoun counties — plus Maryland, DC, and clients nationwide.
Founded by award-winning Director, Producer, and Editor Tom Prather — who launched his career photographing Van Halen — The Blue Wave began as a place to chase creative ideas and produce compelling content. It's grown into an award-winning studio behind national television commercials, promotional videos, Video FAQs, and branding and design work.
Here's the part an out-of-state agency can't put on its page: my career started in Virginia. My first-ever Van Halen shoot was at Jiffy Lube Live, right up the road in Bristow. I'm a DMV kid — I grew up across the river from Old Town Alexandria, put myself through the University of Maryland working the tourism boats in Old Town, and I was literally the last person to graduate from UMD's Radio/TV/Film program before they closed it.
My whole family's in Northern Virginia, I'm over there every week working with clients, and I've still got the 703 number to prove it. I know which markets move fast and which ones want a handshake first. And honestly? I'd rather hash out your project over a paddle on the Potomac than across a conference table. That's not a line. That's just home.

But the videos are only half of it. Our strategy is built around how people actually consume content today. Our distribution methods — online video, video brochures, and wearable video name tags — change not just what gets made, but how it reaches an audience. And our design work goes physical: we install, and sometimes hand-paint, original designs directly onto walls, floors, and storefronts.
Video production in Virginia that doesn't stop at "we shot it." We make it — and we make sure it works.

Chief WaveMaker
Tom Prather, a Maryland native, founded The Blue Wave to produce original television programming. It didn't take long for him to earn a reputation as the guy who sees things differently — and for a two-word mantra to stick: Why not?
Exhibit A is how he broke into the business at all. Prather's first gig was shooting Van Halen — no credentials, no connections, just a few creative phone calls and a stack of letterhead. He talked his way onto the tour. Why not?
From there, he became a sought-after editor and director for national television commercials and long-form projects. Then he launched the Letterbox Film Festival — the world's first monthly film festival — after landing Cabo Wabo tequila as title sponsor. Bigger stage, same instinct: Why not?

SO KIDS SOAR/Dreams For Kids DC
So Kids SOAR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN: 61-1716117) that empowers youth with physical and developmental disabilities to Strive, Own, Achieve, and Realize their potential. Through free adaptive athletic, recreational, and skill-building programs across the Greater DC area, SKS helps kids discover that a disability doesn't get to decide what they're capable of.
Tom Prather served on the board for 13 years. Across that time, The Blue Wave donated production and branding services — telling the organization's story on video to build recognition and drive the donations that keep every program free for the families who count on them.
The programs run entirely on donations, and every dollar goes straight to the kids. If this mission moves you the way it's moved us, you can give at sokidssoar.org.
